Submission Guidelines

Cover Page

1.  The full name and contact details of the contributor(s);
2.  A short biography of the contributor(s), no more than 100 words;
3.  A short abstract of the submission, no more than 200 words;
4.  Titles, captions and references for all images;

Form and style of academic paper submissions

1. Body
All copy should be on A4 white bond paper, on one side of each sheet. Margins should be at least 2cm on all sides. Font to be used is Times New Roman, size 12, single-spaced. The pages must be numbered. Section headings and sub-headings should be clearly indicated.

2. Referencing
All referencing should adhere to the MLA Endnote style. Endnotes should be placed at the end of the text and should be indicated by corresponding numbers placed in the text.

3. Images and Illustrations
Contributions must include title, where appropriate, captions and source.

4. Spelling
Spelling practices should be consistent throughout the article and should follow the Oxford English Dictionary.

5. Style

  • Jones' - no extra 's'.
  • No spaces when ellipses are used.
  • " - double quotation marks for quotes, with ' single quotation marks for quotes within quotes.
  • ' - single quotation marks for concepts, e.g. culture, 'race' and identity.
  • '-ise' and not '-ize' endings - following SA spelling in general.
  • Single space after full stop.
  • 'percent' in full.
  • 20th Century - 'th' in normal, not superscript, and 'Century' capitalised (unless, of course, it's part of an adjectival phrase, e.g.: a 20th-century vase).
  • Long quotations - normal 12-point font, not italicised, and indented on both sides (by 0.5cm), with an empty line above and below; except for initial quotations at the start of a paper, which are formatted in the same way, but also italicised.
  • Titles and sub-headings - first letter of first word only capitalised, except for proper nouns numbers up to and including nine in full, 10 and over in digits.

Submissions of work with a high image content, creative writing, visual essays

1. Submission
All work to be submitted in hard copy as well electronically if possible. 

2. Creative Writing
All creative writing will be peer-reviewed.

3. Image Format and Resolution
All images must be submitted in JPEG (digital) format with a minimum resolution of 300dpi and a maximum resolution of 600dpi.

Conditions of Publication

1. Contributions should not have appeared in print or electronic format, nor should they be under consideration elsewhere. If published, they should not be reproduced in whole or in substantial part without permission from the publishers.

2. Proofs will be sent to the contributors who should return them as soon as possible to the Editors. No rewriting will be allowed at this stage and changes should be limited to corrections of misprints.

3. It is the responsibility of the contributor to seek permission to publish all images, illustrations and maps included in their submission.

Copyright

It is a condition of publication that authors vest copyright in postamble, Centre for African Studies. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and disseminate the work, and the journal, to the widest possible readership. Authors may use the article elsewhere after publication, provided that acknowledgement is given to postamble as the original source of publication, and that postamble is notified. All requests from third parties to reproduce articles should be directed to postamble.
