At the age of
eighteen, my Father embarked on a journey; one that changed my life forever. At
such a young age, in search for a better life, he left his crops, livestock in
Haiti and made his way to the Bahamas on a hand-made boat. He arrived with only
the clothes on his back. “It wasn’t easy, but I was determined”, are the words
that my Father often uses to describe his past. From there, an opportunity for
residency in the United States arose and he took it. A few years later, at the
age of five, I joined my father in the US as a permanent legal Florida
resident. Although I didn’t go into great detail about my Father’s story, I
know that he was faced with many hardships; from finding a place to work and
sleep to finding a job to support himself and his family back home. Till this
day I am amazed by my Father’s willingness to keep pushing. Now at the age of
twenty, my Father’s adventure has served as a motivation for me to never give
up. My life has been a struggle at times, but my hard work, grit, and eagerness
for my education and my community has brought me to Florida International
University (FIU) where I can pursue my dreams.

As a child I
dreamed of attending an institution of higher education. Over the years, my
Parents, Teachers, and Pediatrician have all inspired and advised me to achieve
my goals. In elementary school, my Social Worker, Mrs. Johnson encouraged me to
become fond of reading. From there on, I grew to love books. Through reading
books, I gained an in-depth knowledge of Physician Assistants (PA). Soon after,
I became charmed with medical professionals and aspired to become a PA. I knew
my mom could not afford to help me with college and we knew nothing about financial
aid. Still, I felt in my heart that if I worked hard, got good grades and

stayed focused, I
would find a way to make my dream a reality.

I am a recent
transfer from Broward College and a current Biological Science major at Florida
International University in the process of gaining a Bachelor’s degree. Post
baccalaureate, I plan on applying to a Physician Assistant program. Once the
program is completed, I hope to work in the neonatal intensive care unit
because working with babies have always been my passion.

I believe that I
would be a worthy recipient of a scholarship. As a first generation student, I have
done well in high school and after two years of attending Broward College, I
have completed 60 credits and earned an Associates of Arts degree. My current cumulative
GPA is 3.41. I am academically devoted and dedicated to my studies, yet I am
involved in many extracurricular activities. While in high school, I attended a
medical magnet school where I was affiliated with HOSA (Health Occupation Student
Association) and was the captain of the soccer team for one year. In 2017,
Memorial Regional Hospital presented me with the Patient First Award. During
the past two years, I have volunteered with many organizations. For example, I
volunteered with Broward Health Medical Center, Habitat for Humanity, Humane
Society of Broward County, and Feed the homeless. I even created my own volunteer
opportunity by going to a nursing home once a week to read to the residents. As
a new transfer student at FIU, I plan to get involved. In fact, I have already begun
my quest for participation. I am in the process of joining Alpha Epsilon Delta
honor society and the Transfers Ambassadors Program (TAP).

I am the second
born of four children being raised by a single parent. My mother, Mercelaine
Jean-Louis, is a hardworking woman who struggles to keep food on the table; I
work a job to help support my family, but I am only able to work twenty hours due
to school. Sometimes, as a commute student, getting transportation to school is
a struggle for me because of gas. Since my mom is going through these hard
times, I try my best to keep my grades up, knowing that I have opportunities
that my mother never had.
