In
manufacturing, there are different processes and systems to be factored in.
Manufacturing itself is a term that means: making goods and services using
mental or physical labor to satisfy human wants.  When we talk about these goods we are able to
separate them into two categories; producer goods and consumer goods. Producer
goods, referring to goods that can be turned either into consumer goods or more
producer goods. Then, consumer goods, referring to goods that are able to be
purchased directly from or to the general public. A production system, is a
system that involves all aspects of manufacturing a part or product. A manufacturing
process is a process that utilizes unfinished materials and converts them into
finished products. In order to have a manufacturing processes you need to
identify the manufacturing system being used. There are five types of
manufacturing system designs that can be identified: job shop, flow shop,
linked-cell shop, project shop, and continuous process. The most common being
the job shop, where all machines are collected by function such as putting all
the mills together, all the grinding machines together, and all the lathes
together. Manufacturing utilizes multiple different forms of processes to
create a finished product. These processes include the following: Casting,
forming, machining, joining, surface treatments, additive manufacturing, and heat
treating. Casting and molding, referring to pouring molten metal to fill a
cavity. Forming, referring to modifying the, shape, size, and/or physical
properties of the material. Machining, the process of removing selected areas
from a part for a desired shape or finish. Joining processes can include the
following: mechanical fastening, soldering and brazing, welding, press shrink
or snap fittings, adhesive bonding, and assembly processes. Heat treating is
when you alter the metallurgic and mechanical properties of a metal, for
specific purpose. Other manufacturing processes can include, packaging,
shipping and storing. Another factor in manufacturing you need to consider is
the product life-cycle and life-cycle cost. Product life-cycle can be boiled
down into 5 steps: Startup, rapid growth, maturation, commodity, and decline.
The product life-cycle induces thinking about product evolution over time.
