of functionalized biodegradable and non toxic polymeric nanomaterials for
target-specific capture of (VOCs). Biodegradability is an important and desired
feature as it eliminates concerns regarding the fate of the materials after
their application. Non-toxicity is another important feature when designing new
environmental remediation technologies, especially with the rising concerns
involving the use of nanomaterials for such applications. The incorporation of
amine groups from poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) into the polymeric nanomaterial
allows to capturefor
some VOCs, such as aldehydes and carboxylic acids, to undergo condensation and
acid/base reaction, respectively, providing the basis for the rapid and
selective capture of contaminants.  While
some technologies rely on physical interactions that could potentially be
easily dissociated, this technology is based on the formation of covalent bonds
between the amine functional groups and the targeted aldehyde and/or carboxylic
moieties, which may contribute to a more robust capture technology. Figure 5
demonstrates the mechanisms of aldehyde and carboxylic acid gaseous capture
