Principle of
existentialism and its relevance to the contemporary political setting

Existentialism is a branch of philosophy that mainly focuses
on individual existence based on their freedom and choice. Every individual
takes responsibility through rational decision making and determine their
meaning of life. It suggests that there is point of explanation of the core of
existence. Early philosophers such as Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean-Paul
Sartre, Albert Camus and Simone de Beauvoir included existential themes, such
as dread, boredom, alienation, the absurd, freedom, commitment and concept of nothingness
in their writings (Philosophybasics.com, 2017).

Principles of existentialism

1.
Existence precedes essence

Existentialists asserts that a human being is “thrown
into” into the universe that cannot be “thought away”, and
therefore existence in the universe precedes consciousness and essence (Philosophybasics.com,
2017).

2.
Reason is important to deal with

According to Sartre’s existentialism when men are introduced
to the universe they are nothing and only afterwards will they become something
when they take up personal effort (Philosophybasics.com,
2017).

3.
Anxiety

Human beings realize they are alone in the universe and
hence develop fears for suffering and death which is always creeping. Kierkegaard
explained rationality as a mechanism to deal with the fears. The world is
irrational, lacks order and is absurd in nature but individuals have to make
rational decisions to survive (John, 2017)

4.
Freedom

Similar to the concept of subjectivism, most existentialists
including Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche agreed that every individual in
the universe must have a personal experience in decision making and truth
finding. They are free to make any decision depending on what is moral and best
for them (Philosophybasics.com, 2017).

5.
Contact with nothingness

Some existentialists, like Nietzsche, proclaimed that
“God is dead” and that the concept of God is obsolete although other
spiritual ones object this. The important factor for existentialists is the
freedom of choice to believe or not to believe (Philosophybasics.com, 2017).

6.
Alienation

Alienation suggested by Hegel explains development of spirit
and the process of human self-development through a process of alienation. Sociological
alienation is the main topic from which the contemporary thought about
alienation has grown. By alienation Hegel refers to the process by which
‘finite spirit,’ the human self, externalizes itself and then confronts its own,
other than being something separate, distinct and opposite to it. (Daronkolaee and
Hojjat, 2012)

Relevance to the
contemporary political setting

The political setting may be viewed as set of governing
rules created by individuals of a place or region with the aim of creating
order by conflict resolution. Existentialism definition portrays it as very
subjective subject that stresses on total development of a person and makes
them conscious of their individuality or self. Self-realization is crucial for
self-improvement. Man should be able to realize his/her essence as plays a
great role to the societal setup since everyone develops a self-drive avoid
absurdities of the universe like suffering. Everyone concentrates on self and a
sense of order is ultimately realized when individuals create rules for
themselves by their own will and choice (John, 2017).

Freedom provided by existentialism also gives space for
individual to focus on their strengths and interest basing on personal will creating
a positive energy to work very hard and achieve their goals again set by
freewill. When everyone has freedom a general picture of physical and economic growth
of a place is observed. This is because freedom allows them to freely explore
different ecological niches and come up with ideas to better use of gifts
provided by mother nature. A better understanding of the environment ensures varied
sources of livelihood for survival. Freedom also teaches sense and gives freedom
to believe in anything since consequences are just on you (John, 2017).

Existentialism instills values to human beings by promoting
subjects such as moral and religious education in the curriculum. These values
are crucial for future application and creates a peaceful co-existence among
people. When everyone is peaceful an environment for self-improvement through acts
of will is created. Science and technology defines aim and value of education
by computers and statistical data whereas existentialism puts it clear that it
is not possible to measure value with an objective scale but human values are
quite important for future application (John, 2017).
