The arrival of new technology to the cars, from navigation with the 4G connection to driver assistance systems, is opening new possibilities beyond the traditional suppliers of automotive equipment. Although the LG brand has appeared in a wide variety of consumer electronics products, the South Korean company is entering the automotive field. LG, along with partners NXP (a chipmaker), and Hella, a specialist for automotive cameras, created a new automotive display platform to detect objects and hazards in the driving environment to avoid crashes and accidents. Partners say their new viewing platform is open, especially when compared to proprietary systems used by many automakers today. As for the implementation of this platform, all that the companies have been able to reveal is that a European automotive manufacturer has already adopted the platform. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are becoming increasingly common. These systems consist of a sensor, such as a camera or radar, that detects potential shocks. The systems alert the driver, put on the brakes automatically or do both. These systems are the precursors of the systems equipped with more sensors that will enable autonomous cars. This new viewing platform depends on a camera mounted behind the windshield near the rearview mirror. With this processor, the platform can identify cyclists and pedestrians and put the brakes automatically. The system can also read road markings, notifying drivers of stop signs, speed limits, lane lines, or when the car skids. At the end of 2017, NXP and Hella announced what companies call “an open viewing platform for safe autonomous driving.” Hella brings the cameras and NXP chips that can process the images. The addition of LG adds more experience in image processing. Last year LG also announced that it would offer OLED technology in the taillights to automotive manufacturers. This type of taillights would use less energy and could be more durable than current systems.
