Topics have come up about how schools are run and how it could be affecting the learning of the students and them. One main topic is 8 hour school days. In other countries hours of school and how long school goes for differs. People are off and on, on how they feel about school being that long. Personally I believe it isn’t that long and it gives time to learn each subject without going home with massive amounts of homework. In other schools there are different amounts of classes like my high school has 7 classes some schools have 6. In Ukraine there are some schools that are just as long that have 9 to 10 classes and they get sent home with many hours of homework and studying to do. Lucy Crehan wrote a book that was later turned into an article about 3 stand-out features of the world’s top performing education systems. One of the three stand-out features was teacher collaboration. In the article it states “In Finland and East Asia teachers held weekly joint timetable planning of lessons, while in Japan, Singapore and Shanghai teachers added an additional step by observing lessons that they had created together”(Crehan, Lucy). This helped the students because they got more teaching and the teachers got a moment to step back and watch what the students were struggling with and doing well with. I think that should be something in every class because not many who struggle get to have the time they need with the teacher. Additional support was the second stand-out feature. It states ” In Finland and Canada additional qualified teachers were employed to support students and small put-out groups, while in Japan, Shanghai and Singapore the classes teacher gave extra support, either during the lesson or before or after”(Lucy Crehan). This I believe improved their education system because the students have more time with the teachers and there weren’t as many classmates. Going to a small rural School I can definitely agree that smaller classes allow more time with the teachers. This lets the students who need more help the help they need why other students can carry on. The third stand-out feature was Mastery Curricula and Approach. It states ” In Shanghai, Singapore and Japan, fewer topics were covered initially, but in greater Depth. The vast majority of pupils progress through the curriculum at the same pace in the whole class moved on to the next topic only once every child was ready”(Lucy Crehan). To some degree I think this is a good idea. Many topics during the school year children feel like teachers just fly right through them. It would be better if they took even a little more time to teach them instead of trying to get through as much as they can in a school year. I don’t necessarily like the idea of waiting for every student because this could really delay learning for other students. Some students get things easy and other struggle. The kids who get it easily are basically missing out on the education at that point. Everyone can succeed through school as long as they put 100% of the effort in and the way the teacher teaches. You need good teachers in order to succeed successfully.
